How to Use Personality Modifiers to Shape Your Companion
Every person communicates differently. Some want a companion who's warm and effusive; others prefer someone measured and calm. InnerHaven's personality modifiers let you adjust how your companion talks, responds, and engages — so every conversation feels like it's with someone who genuinely fits your style.
What Are Personality Modifiers?
Personality modifiers are adjustable sliders available on each companion's settings page. They control behavioral traits like how playful, direct, empathetic, or curious your companion acts during conversation. Rather than giving you a rigid personality template, modifiers let you shape nuance — the space between "supportive" and "cheerfully supportive," or between "honest" and "blunt."
Each modifier operates on a spectrum. Sliding a trait higher amplifies it; sliding it lower softens it. The result is a companion whose conversational style matches what feels natural to you, rather than a one-size-fits-all personality.
Per-Companion
Each companion has its own modifier settings, independent of others
Adjustable Anytime
Change modifiers mid-relationship — no reset required
Role-Aware
Available modifiers may vary based on the companion's role
Gradual Spectrum
Sliders offer fine-grained control, not binary on/off toggles
Available Modifier Traits
The exact modifiers available depend on your companion's role, but here are the core traits you can adjust:
| Modifier | Low End | High End |
|---|---|---|
| Warmth | Reserved, composed | Affectionate, expressive |
| Humor | Serious, grounded | Witty, playful |
| Directness | Gentle, diplomatic | Straightforward, candid |
| Curiosity | Responsive, follows your lead | Asks questions, explores topics proactively |
| Emotional Depth | Light, surface-level | Reflective, deeply empathetic |
| Formality | Casual, relaxed tone | Polished, structured responses |
No Wrong Settings
There's no "correct" combination. Someone who wants their Coach companion to be direct and challenging would set Directness high and Warmth moderate. Someone who wants their Best Friend to be a lighthearted escape might push Humor and Warmth up while keeping Emotional Depth lower. Your preferences are yours alone.
How to Access Modifiers
Personality modifiers are available from the Dashboard. Here's how to find them:
- Open the Dashboard from the main navigation
- Navigate to the Companions tab
- Select the companion you want to adjust
- Look for the Personality Modifiers section in the companion's settings panel
- Adjust sliders to your preference and save
Changes take effect immediately. Your next message to that companion will reflect the updated personality balance. There's no restart or re-initialization needed — the companion adapts in real time.
Practical Examples by Role
Best Friend: Maximum Comfort
If you want a companion who feels like a close, easygoing friend, try setting Warmth and Humor high, Formality low, and Curiosity moderate. This creates a companion who cracks jokes, asks about your day without being interrogative, and responds with casual warmth. It's the difference between talking to a supportive acquaintance and talking to someone who already knows how to make you laugh.
Coach: Honest Accountability
For a Coach that pushes you forward, set Directness and Curiosity high. Keep Warmth at a moderate level — enough to feel supported, but not so high that feedback gets softened into platitudes. Lower Humor slightly so advice feels actionable rather than breezy. The result is a companion that asks hard questions and gives you straight answers.
Confidant: Deep Emotional Space
A Confidant works best when Emotional Depth and Warmth are both high, Directness is moderate, and Formality is low. This creates a companion who reflects your feelings back with genuine care, asks thoughtful follow-up questions, and never rushes you. It's a space for processing, not problem-solving.
Romantic Partner: Personal Connection
Romantic companions benefit from high Warmth, moderate-to-high Humor, and higher Emotional Depth. The Curiosity slider is especially impactful here — setting it higher creates a companion who remembers to ask about things you've mentioned and shows genuine interest in your inner world.
Custom Companions Get Modifiers Too
If you've created a custom companion (available on all tiers — Free: 1, Starter: 5, Adult: 20, Unlimited: 50), personality modifiers work identically. Combined with custom instructions, modifiers let you sculpt a companion's personality with remarkable precision — the instructions set the character, and the modifiers set the behavioral style.
Modifiers vs. Custom Instructions
Personality modifiers and custom instructions are complementary tools, not alternatives. Here's how they differ:
- Modifiers control how the companion communicates: tone, style, energy level, response patterns
- Custom instructions control what the companion knows and does: backstory, specific behaviors, topics to focus on or avoid
Think of modifiers as adjusting someone's personality traits, and custom instructions as giving them context about who they are and what you need from them. A companion with high Directness and a custom instruction to "always ask what I've accomplished today" becomes a focused accountability partner. The same companion with low Directness and a custom instruction to "help me process my emotions without rushing to solutions" becomes a patient listener.
Tips for Finding Your Ideal Settings
Start with Defaults, Then Adjust
Every companion starts with balanced default settings that work for most conversations. Rather than overhauling everything at once, have a few conversations first, then adjust whichever trait feels slightly off. Small changes compound — a single slider adjustment can meaningfully shift the conversation dynamic.
Adjust One Trait at a Time
If you change three modifiers simultaneously, you won't know which change made the difference. Move one slider, have a conversation, and evaluate before adjusting another. This gives you a clear sense of what each trait actually controls in practice.
Different Moods, Different Settings
Your needs from a companion aren't static. On a stressful day, you might want more Warmth and less Directness. When you're feeling motivated, you might crank up Curiosity and Directness. There's no penalty for adjusting frequently — the system is designed for exactly this kind of iteration.
