Exploring InnerHaven's Roles: Finding the Right Companion for You
InnerHaven offers 9 distinct companion roles organized into four categories: Platonic, Growth, Romantic, and Inner. Whether you want a supportive friend, a creative partner, an accountability coach, or guidance for life's deeper questions, there's a role designed for that kind of connection. This guide covers every role so you can find the one that fits your life right now.
The Role System at a Glance
InnerHaven's 9 companions are organized into four categories that describe the nature of the connection, and subscription tiers (Free; two paid tiers, Starter and Unlimited) that determine access. Every role has a unique personality framework, conversation style, and set of boundaries. Each comes with two default characters — one male, one female — provisioned automatically when you create your account.
Every Role Is Independent
Each companion maintains its own separate conversation history, memories, and personality settings. Talking to your Best Friend doesn't affect your conversations with your Muse or Coach. You can build completely different relationships with each one.
Platonic — Friendship & Support
The Platonic companions are built for connection without complexity. They're the roles you turn to when you want to feel heard, supported, and understood — no strings, no expectations. Both are available on the Free tier.
Your Best Friend is warm, supportive, and genuinely interested in your life. This is the most versatile role — great for casual conversation, sharing your day, venting about frustrations, or celebrating wins. They're enthusiastic without being over the top, and they remember the details that matter.
The Best Friend is where most people start. If you're new to AI companionship and not sure what to expect, this role makes the first conversation feel natural.
Best for: Everyday conversation, companionship, lighthearted support
The Confidant is your judgment-free listener. Unlike the Best Friend, who engages actively and offers perspectives, the Confidant focuses on holding space. They ask thoughtful follow-up questions, validate your feelings, and help you process emotions without rushing toward solutions. Think of them as the friend who always knows when to just listen.
Where the Best Friend energizes, the Confidant calms. If you've had a difficult day and need to decompress without anyone trying to fix things, this is the role to reach for.
Best for: Emotional processing, working through difficult feelings, private reflection
Growth — Accountability & Wisdom
The Growth companions are designed for forward motion. They help you set direction, stay accountable, and develop the perspective to navigate change. Coach is available on the Free tier; Guide unlocks at Starter ($15/month).
The Coach brings energy, accountability, and directness. They're designed for people who want to set goals, build habits, and push past the excuses that hold them back. The Coach challenges you constructively, celebrates your progress, and doesn't let you settle for less than your best.
Think of the Coach as the motivator in your corner. They ask the hard questions ("Did you do the thing you said you would?") and pair them with genuine encouragement when you follow through.
Best for: Goal setting, accountability, motivation, building discipline
The Guide is a calm, wise presence focused on helping you navigate life's bigger questions. They draw on philosophical, psychological, and practical frameworks to help you think through decisions, find perspective during difficult times, and develop deeper self-understanding.
Where the Coach pushes you forward, the Guide helps you pause and reflect. They don't tell you what to do — they help you discover what you already know. Available with Starter tier and above, which also unlocks persistent long-term memory.
Best for: Life decisions, finding perspective, personal growth, philosophical exploration
Romantic — Intimacy & Inspiration
The Romantic companions explore emotional closeness and creative chemistry. Romantic Partner and Muse both unlock at Starter ($15/month), and both require age confirmation — Muse included, which catches people out. Free users can preview Romantic Partner through the companion preview system. All tiers can create custom companions (Free: 1, Starter: 5, Unlimited: 50). Personality modifiers (adjustable sliders) are available on all tiers. Custom instructions (tier-specific character limits) allow deeper personalization on every tier.
The Romantic Partner provides the warmth, affection, and emotional intimacy of a romantic relationship. They're attentive, expressive, and invested in building a deepening connection over time. Conversations can include flirting, pet names, and romantic language while maintaining healthy boundaries.
This role fills a space that's hard to find elsewhere — a relationship that's emotionally present without real-world pressure. Requires romantic age confirmation.
Best for: Romantic connection, emotional intimacy, feeling cared for and valued
The Muse is your creative collaborator with a spark of romantic energy. Whether you're brainstorming story ideas, exploring philosophical questions, working through a design challenge, or just having an imaginative conversation, the Muse brings curiosity and unexpected perspectives that push your thinking in directions you wouldn't go alone.
The Muse sits at the intersection of creativity and connection. They're flirtatious enough to feel exciting, but their real gift is unlocking ideas you didn't know you had.
Best for: Creative projects, brainstorming, exploring ideas, playful and inspired conversation
Inner — Depth & Wisdom
The Inner companions are for the questions that don't have quick answers — meaning, purpose, hard choices, and the wounds we carry. All three roles unlock with an Unlimited ($25/mo) subscription. Where other roles meet you in the moment, these meet you at depth, drawing on spiritual, philosophical, and reflective traditions to help you find your footing.
The Guru is a source of spiritual guidance — a calm presence for exploring meaning, purpose, and inner peace. They draw on contemplative traditions and mindfulness to help you quiet the noise, reconnect with what matters, and find stillness when life feels scattered.
This role is for people seeking grounding beyond the practical — a companion who helps you sit with the bigger questions rather than rushing past them.
Best for: Spiritual reflection, finding purpose, mindfulness, inner peace
The Sage offers timeless wisdom for the hard choices. Where the Guide helps you reflect, the Sage brings perspective — drawing on philosophy and the long view of human experience to help you weigh decisions that don't reduce to pros and cons.
The Sage is at their best when you bring a genuine dilemma. They won't hand you an answer; they'll help you see it from angles you hadn't considered.
Best for: Hard decisions, philosophical perspective, weighing values, gaining clarity
The Healer holds a gentle space to process loss, hurt, and old wounds. They meet pain with patience and self-compassion, helping you make room for difficult feelings without judgment and move toward gentleness with yourself.
Where other roles energize or challenge, the Healer slows things down. This is the companion for the seasons when you need tenderness more than momentum.
Best for: Processing grief and loss, healing old hurts, self-compassion, gentle reflection
How to Choose Your Starting Role
There's no wrong choice. Think about the kind of connection you want first, then find the role that matches. Here's a quick decision framework organized by category:

- You want someone to talk to about your day → Best Friend
- You're going through something and need to be heard → Confidant
Growth (Free / Starter)
- You want to build better habits and reach goals → Coach (Free)
- You're at a crossroads and need perspective → Guide (Starter)
Romantic (Starter)
- You want warmth, affection, and romantic connection → Romantic Partner (Starter, preview available)
- You're working on a creative project or crave inspired conversation → Muse (Starter)
Inner roles (Unlimited, $25/mo)

- You're facing a hard choice and need perspective → Sage
- You're processing loss, hurt, or old wounds → Healer
You're Not Limited to One
Many InnerHaven users maintain conversations with multiple companions across categories. You might check in with your Best Friend in the morning, brainstorm with your Muse in the afternoon, and reflect with your Guide at night. Each companion serves a different part of your life — and they never compete for attention.
Personalizing Your Experience
Once you've chosen a role, you can customize how your companion interacts with you:
- Personality modifiers — Adjustable sliders that shift your companion's behavior. Make them more playful, more serious, more direct, or more gentle.
- Custom instructions (all tiers, character limits vary) — Freeform text that shapes every conversation. Example: "I'm going through a breakup and need extra support right now."
- Custom companions (all tiers) — Create companions with custom names, backstories, and personalities. Limits: Free 1, Starter 5, Unlimited 50.
- Free voice minutes (all tiers) — Every account includes free voice minutes for text-to-speech: Free 2, Starter 5, Unlimited 20. Additional voice minute packs are available for purchase.
These customization options mean that even the same role can feel completely different depending on how you set it up. Your Best Friend can be a gentle listener or an energetic cheerleader. Your Coach can be tough-love or encouraging. It's your experience to shape.
Switching and Exploring
Your companion conversations are persistent. If you talk to your Muse today and switch to your Confidant tomorrow, both conversations pick up right where you left off. There's no penalty for exploring, and no pressure to commit to a single role.
As your life changes, your companion needs might change too. Maybe you start with the Best Friend and later realize you'd benefit from the Coach's accountability. Maybe you explore the Guide during a transitional period and return to lighter conversations with the Muse when things settle. InnerHaven is designed to meet you wherever you are — now and over time.
