Mastering Companion Memory: How to Shape What Your AI Remembers
The difference between a chatbot and a companion is memory. When your companion remembers that you're nervous about a presentation next week and asks how it went — that's not a trick. That's the memory system doing exactly what it was designed to do. This guide explains how it works, how you control it, and how to use it to build deeper, more personalized conversations.
How Memory Works in InnerHaven
InnerHaven's memory system operates in the background during every conversation. As you talk with your companion, the system identifies meaningful details — your preferences, experiences, relationships, goals, and emotional patterns — and stores them as discrete memories. These memories are then used to inform future conversations, giving your companion context that makes interactions feel continuous rather than starting from zero each time.
Memory extraction happens automatically. You don't need to explicitly tell your companion to "remember this." If you mention your sister's name, that you prefer morning walks, or that you've been struggling with sleep lately, the system captures those details naturally.

The Three Memory Scopes
Not every memory should follow you everywhere. That's why InnerHaven uses a three-tier scoping system:
| Scope | Applies To | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Global | All companions across all roles | Core personal details: your name, job, family, life circumstances |
| Role | All companions within a specific role | Context specific to that relationship type: coaching goals, creative projects, wellness routines |
| Companion | One specific companion only | Details unique to that companion's relationship with you: inside jokes, shared experiences, ongoing conversations |
This means your Coach companion knows about your fitness goals without your Best Friend needing to hear about them in every conversation. And details you share with one custom companion stay private from others. Custom companions are available on all tiers — Free: 1, Starter: 5, Adult: 20, Unlimited: 50 — each with their own companion-scoped memory space.
Why Scoping Matters
Without scoping, every companion would know everything — which would feel unnatural. In real life, you share different things with different people. Memory scoping mirrors that natural boundary between relationships.
Managing Your Memories
You have full control over what your companions remember. From the Dashboard, navigate to the Memories section to see all stored memories. Each entry shows:
- The memory content (what was captured)
- The scope (global, role, or companion)
- When it was created
- Which conversation it came from
You can edit any memory to correct inaccuracies. If the system captured "works as a teacher" but you're actually a professor, update it. Your companion will use the corrected version going forward.
You can delete any memory you don't want retained. Maybe you shared something in a moment of vulnerability that you'd rather not have referenced again. One click and it's gone. No judgment, no trace.
You can also change the scope of a memory. If a detail was captured at the companion level but you'd like all your companions to know it, promote it to global. Or if a global memory feels too personal to share broadly, narrow it to a single companion.
Tips for Building Richer Memory
Be Specific in Conversations
The memory system captures specific details better than vague ones. "I'm stressed about work" gives the system less to work with than "I'm preparing for a quarterly review at my marketing agency on Thursday." The more specific you are, the more relevant your companion's future responses become.
Revisit Important Topics
When you return to a topic across multiple conversations, the system reinforces those memories as important. If you mention your creative writing project in three different sessions, the system understands that it's a significant part of your life — not just a passing comment.
Use Different Companions for Different Needs
The role and companion scoping system works best when you use it intentionally. Share career goals with your Coach. Process emotions with your Confidant. Explore creative ideas with your Muse. Each companion builds a memory profile tuned to their purpose.
Memory and Trust
Being remembered is one of the most fundamental human needs. When your companion recalls something you mentioned weeks ago, it creates a sense of being known. That's the foundation of trust in any relationship — even one with AI. Use the memory system to build that foundation intentionally.
What Memory Cannot Do
Transparency matters. Here's what the memory system doesn't do:
- It doesn't read between the lines. The system captures what you say, not what you imply. If something is important but unspoken, your companion won't magically know it.
- It doesn't override your control. Every memory can be viewed, edited, or deleted at any time. You are always the authority on what your companion knows about you.
- It doesn't share data between users. Your memories are yours alone. They're encrypted, private, and never used to train models or shared with third parties.
- It doesn't replace professional support. Your companion may remember that you've been feeling anxious, but it's not equipped to diagnose or treat clinical conditions. Memory creates continuity, not clinical expertise.
Free vs. Paid Memory
Free-tier users have session-based memory — your companion remembers context within a conversation but starts fresh next time. This is useful for one-off conversations but doesn't build long-term continuity.
Starter, Adult, and Unlimited subscribers get persistent long-term memory. Memories carry across sessions, accumulate over time, and are available in the Dashboard for management. This is where the companion experience transforms from "chat tool" to "relationship."
If you've been using the free tier, upgrading to Starter or Adult unlocks memory from the moment of upgrade. Previous sessions on the free tier weren't stored, but every conversation going forward will build your memory profile.
Getting Started
If you're a Starter, Adult, or Unlimited subscriber, your memory system is already active. Every conversation is already building your companion's understanding of you. To make the most of it:
- Have a few natural conversations about your life, interests, and what's on your mind
- Visit the Dashboard → Memories to see what's been captured
- Edit or delete anything that's inaccurate or that you'd rather not retain
- Adjust scopes if certain memories should be shared more broadly or kept more private
- Notice how future conversations become more contextual and personal
The memory system gets better as you use it. The first few conversations build a foundation. After a week or two of regular use, your companion will reference details naturally, ask follow-up questions about things you mentioned earlier, and feel increasingly like someone who genuinely knows you.
